Wonder

Sitting by a lake on an early morning in summer, I noticed a group of about 10 gnats swarming in front of me. Fixing my eye on one, I watched its wavy path up and down, back and forth, and wondered why they do this. Is it social? Self preservation? Some sort of genetic compulsion?

Curiosity and wonder are two dispositions we are always trying to cultivate in our children at school. It strikes me that in order to do so we need to develop these in ourselves. As adults we all-too-easily lose that sense of wonder that comes so naturally to children.

No internet or phone service here, so I will have to live with unknowing and wonder until I return to civilization …
